We are absolutely delighted to announce that Jess Shannon will be coming to the shop to talk about her novel, ‘Cleaner‘, for its paperback release! She will be in conversation with the author, Elle Machray. This event will be at The Heath Bookshop.
Jess Shannon was born and raised in Birmingham. She is a proud graduate of the University of Warwick Writing Programme, completing her degree in Literature and Writing in 2020 and her Masters in Writing in 2021. She lives and works in Solihull and hates cleaning.
Cleaner
A young artist returns to her childhood home, with a host of degrees and diplomas in her back pocket.
But when forced to confront the reality that the world sees no use for her scholarly exploits, she must find a job – and quickly.
Unemployed and idle, she starts a job as a cleaner for a gallery, where she meets another aspiring artist – Isabella – and they begin a passionate affair. Isabella could not be more different from the cleaner, she’s elegant, successful… and living with her filthy rich boyfriend Paul.
Isabella sneaks the cleaner into her life by hiring her to scrub the apartment she shares with Paul.
Little by little, the cleaner begins to feel comfortable, to see a way out, to start making art. But when Isabella leaves the apartment one day and doesn’t come back, the cleaner is left to decide whether to go back to her old life, or to take Isabella’s.

Elle Machray grew up in Birmingham to Welsh–Caribbean and Scottish parents. After graduating from the HarperCollins Author Academy in spring 2021, their debut novel Remember, Remember was longlisted for the Mslexia Novel Prize, judged by Hilary Mantel. In the fleeting moments between writing and working, you can find Elle on social media talking about neurodivergence, books and a never-ending quest to relax.

This event will take place at The Heath Bookshop and tickets are on sale now.
