We are delighted to welcome Elle Machray back to The Heath Bookshop to talk about their latest book, Havisham.

Elle Machray grew up in Birmingham to Caribbean and Scottish parents. Elle is an Observer Top 10 Debut Novelist, winner of the Somewhere: For Us Culture Award and featured on The List’s Top 100 influential people of 2024. In 2025, Elle founded The Lithouse, a bookish travel venture connecting readers to iconic literary locations around the world. Elle’s debut novel Remember, Remember was longlisted for the Mslexia Novel Prize, judged by Dame Hilary Mantel and was shortlisted for Scotland’s National Book Award. Elle’s second book, Havisham, reimagines Dickens’ iconic jilted bride in a tale of romance and revenge and will be published in 2026.

Havisham
Jilted bride. Mad witch. Tragic villainess.
This time, she will have her revenge.
Charlotte Havisham has a secret.
She’s been underestimated for too long: by her former fiancé, Compeyson; by her family; and by society.
But now her true heart’s desire is within reach for the first time. And she will stop at nothing to get it.
This is the story of Miss Havisham as you’ve never heard it before. And she will exceed all expectations.
A thrilling and immersive historical novel, Havisham is a queer feminist reimagining in which Dickens’ most infamous female character tells her side of the story at last.

PRAISE FOR HAVISHAM

‘I was completely engrossed by Machray’s vivid retelling … Havisham brings a fresh perspective to one of literature’s most complicated figures.’ Stacey Thomas
‘Deftly woven and alive with rage, Havisham is a compulsive read, equal parts fierce reclaiming of one of literature’s most monstered women, and tender exploration of betrayal, loss and love.’ Kat Dunn
‘From the very first page, you know you are in the hands of a supremely talented writer … This is a glorious feminist reimagining of Great Expectations that gives Miss Havisham the story she deserves.’ Naomi Kelsey
